You bought a decent laptop two or three years ago. Now it takes five minutes to start, browsers feel sluggish, and every application has a lag before it responds. Before buying a new one, here is the truth about what is making it slow and what actually fixes it.

Step 1: Find Out What Is Actually Slowing Your Laptop Down

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager on Windows. Click the Performance tab. Look at CPU, RAM, and Disk usage. The one that is consistently near 100 percent is your bottleneck.

  • High CPU at idle - a background process is misbehaving. Click the Processes tab and sort by CPU. The offender is usually at the top.
  • High RAM at idle - you may have too many applications starting with Windows, or genuinely have insufficient RAM for your usage pattern.
  • Disk at 100 percent constantly - this is a red flag. It usually means your hard drive is struggling, either because it is nearly full, failing, or because it is an old HDD that is being overwhelmed by modern Windows demands.

Free Things to Do Right Now

  • Disable startup programs: Task Manager, Startup tab. Disable everything you do not need immediately on boot. This alone can reduce boot time significantly.
  • Switch to High Performance power plan: Settings, Power, Power Mode, Best Performance.
  • Run Disk Cleanup: search for it in the Start menu. Clear system files, Windows update cleanup, and temp files.
  • Disable visual effects for performance: run sysdm.cpl, go to Advanced, Performance Settings, and select Adjust for best performance.
  • Run a full malware scan: Windows Defender full scan. Malware is a surprisingly common cause of unexplained slowness.

When Free Fixes Are Not Enough: Hardware Upgrades

If software cleanup made no meaningful difference, the problem is hardware:

  • HDD to SSD upgrade - if your laptop has a spinning hard drive, replacing it with an SSD is the single most effective speed improvement available. Boot times drop from minutes to seconds.
  • RAM upgrade - if Task Manager shows RAM consistently above 80-90 percent, adding RAM resolves the bottleneck. Most laptops made after 2015 can accept a RAM upgrade.
  • Thermal servicing - if the laptop is overheating, the CPU is throttling itself to avoid damage. Cleaning the fan and replacing thermal paste removes this hidden performance penalty.

When It Is Not Hardware or Software When the Drive Is Failing

A hard drive in the early stages of failure causes system-wide slowness as Windows constantly retries failed reads. The Disk at 100 percent reading in Task Manager is a strong clue. If you hear any clicking sounds alongside the slowness, stop using the laptop and book a diagnostic immediately data loss is the next step after a failing drive.

What a Professional Tune Up Includes

A Pockit engineer diagnoses the actual bottleneck not just the symptom. Software cleanup, driver optimisation, thermal assessment, and hardware upgrade recommendations are all part of the service, with a clear quote before anything is done.
