Nobody is lying. The problem is almost certainly not your internet plan. The bottleneck is between your router and your device and it is fixable.
How Broadband Speed Actually Travels to Your Device
Your internet plan speed is the capacity of the connection between your ISP and your router. What happens after the router is a separate system your home WiFi network and it has its own limitations.
- Speed from ISP to router: close to your plan speed, usually. This is what your ISP is responsible for.
- Speed from router to your device via WiFi: this is where most loss happens, and it depends entirely on your equipment, placement, and configuration.
A 200 Mbps plan delivers 200 Mbps to your router. If your WiFi is poorly configured or the router is outdated, your device might receive 20-30 Mbps from the same router.
The Real Reasons for Slow Speed in Indian Homes
- Router placement - the most common and easiest to fix. A router placed inside a closed cabinet or behind a TV delivers significantly less WiFi coverage than the same router elevated and centrally placed. Walls, especially the thick concrete construction standard in Mumbai buildings, block 5 GHz signal aggressively.
- Router age - a 5-7 year old router is likely an 802.11n (WiFi 4) device that was never designed to support modern speeds. Replacing it is often the fastest fix.
- ISP-provided routers - these are typically budget devices provided at minimum cost. They get the job done at basic levels but are often the bottleneck in homes with good internet plans.
- Channel congestion - in Mumbai apartment buildings, 40-50 nearby networks compete on 2.4 GHz channels. The effective bandwidth available to each user drops accordingly. Switching to 5 GHz or changing channels manually is often a significant improvement.
- Connecting on the wrong band - many devices default to 2.4 GHz even when 5 GHz is available and the device is in range. Manually connecting nearby devices to 5 GHz is an immediate improvement.
How to Test Actual Speed and Read the Results Correctly
The only way to diagnose where the bottleneck is:
- Plug your laptop into the router via ethernet cable. Run a speed test. This is your actual plan speed.
- Disconnect the ethernet and run a speed test via WiFi from your usual location. This is your current WiFi speed.
- The difference between those two numbers is your WiFi loss. If the ethernet test matches your plan and the WiFi test is dramatically lower, the problem is your WiFi setup, not your plan.
Fixes That Actually Work
- Move the router to a higher, more central location in your home. Elevated placement and open space make a measurable difference.
- Switch frequently used devices to 5 GHz. On your router admin page, separate the two bands with different names so you can force devices to the correct band.
- Change your WiFi channel manually. Download a WiFi analyser app on your phone (WiFi Analyzer on Android). Find the least crowded channel and set your router to it.
- For devices that need maximum speed smart TV, work desktop, gaming console run an ethernet cable. Wired beats wireless in every meaningful way.
